Can You Recognize Alzheimer’s Disease in Your Elderly Loved One?

There are over 5 million people in America who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Many professionals believe that in 30 years, there will be nearly 3 times that number. It is essential to detect any symptoms of this disease in your elderly loved one as soon as you can. This will help your elderly loved one to get the care they need and to help keep them safe. While there is currently no cure for this disease, there are still some things that can be done to help some of those who have Alzheimer’s disease, especially while still in the early stages.

If you and other loved ones can learn more about the warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease, everyone can keep an eye out for those in your elderly loved one. If something is noticed, then a plan of action can be put into place between your loved one, family members, elder care providers, and your loved one’s doctor, as well.

Signs That Often Go Unnoticed

It is important to know that there are some signs that often go unnoticed in Alzheimer’s disease. Knowing more about these and being able to recognize them could help you and others to recognize this disease early on in your elderly loved one. Some of these signs include the following:

  • Personality and/or mood changes
  • Trouble getting tasks done that they have always been able to do
  • Difficulty saying certain words or writing properly
  • Feeling more anxious than normal

There are numerous things that could cause these signs. This is why many family members will dismiss these as just a normal part of aging. However, if you do notice these things in your elderly loved one, it is important to have them see a doctor. It is possible that they could have Alzheimer’s disease.

Daily Life Disruptions

With Alzheimer’s disease, there are many things that are happening with your elderly loved one’s brain and body. With everything that is going on inside of them, it could be overwhelming and lead to a disruption to their day. They might become confused easily by any changes that occur in their day. They might start forgetting what tasks they usually do every day such as paying bills or taking a shower.

Becoming Disengaged

Have you noticed that your elderly loved one is forgetting who their loved ones are? Have they forgotten your name? Does it seem like they aren’t really there when you are talking to them? Is your elderly loved one having difficulties keeping up with the topic of a conversation? If any of these things are going on, they could have Alzheimer’s disease.

Judgment and Mobility Issues

With Alzheimer’s disease, your elderly loved one could start having issues with their judgment and/or mobility. Your elderly loved one might be scared to use the stairs, although they have done it for a long time. They might have issues with their hearing or depth perception. With this disease, elderly people often start having judgment issues including buying things they never would have before.

If you notice any of these issues in your elderly loved one, they could have Alzheimer’s disease. Be sure that you schedule them a doctor’s appointment as soon as possible.
