How To Make Getting Dressed Easier For Seniors

Personal Care at Home Mount Laurel NJ-How To Make Getting Dressed Easier For Seniors

As they get older seniors may need physical help with tasks like getting dressed. But seniors may need more than just help with fasting buttons or tying shoelaces. Seniors who have dementia or other cognitive impairments may need help choosing clothes or making sure they have appropriate clothing for the weather. Whenever seniors are having trouble with hygiene tasks like bathing, dressing, brushing their teeth, or going to the bathroom it helps to get personal care at home services.

Seniors who have a hard time dressing may start to isolate themselves and not want to leave the house because they don’t feel confident in how they look. That can cause them to have poor mental health as well as increase their risk of stress-related illness.

A few things that can make getting dressed easier for seniors are:

Personal Care At Home

Personal care at home allows seniors to take care of these tasks with dignity and discreet help from trained professionals. Personal care at home can help seniors with tasks as basic as washing their face or as complicated as shaving. They will give seniors the assistance they need to look and feel their best no matter what.

Organizing Clothing

A great way to help seniors make good clothing choices is to organize clothes into outfits so that seniors can grab an entire outfit and put the on. To organize clothes by outfit put together socks, underwear, a bra if necessary, pants or a skirt, a top, and then a sweater to wear over that. Bundle them together and put them in an easy-to-open drawer. Create another outfit bundle and put that next to the first in the dresser drawer. Then each day your senior parent just needs to grab a bundle and everything they need will be in that bundle.

Putting Clothes In Easy To Reach Spaces

Seniors don’t necessarily need to put their clothes into closets. Try to think of ways to include functional storage in the places where your senior loved one usually is. For example, if your senior loved one prefers to get dressed in the bathroom after their shower put a small mobile drawer cart in the bathroom to hold outfit bundles. Then your senior loved one can dress in the bathroom without having to go all the way back to their room. Keep pajamas in the bathroom too, and put jackets and heavy sweaters next to doors where seniors can grab them if they are going outside.

Use A Clothing List

You can create a large print clothing list and hang it on your senior loved one’s closet door or bedroom door with a list of the clothing they need to wear. It gives your senior loved one a visual reminder of the clothing they were supposed to have. A simple list reminding them to put on underwear, socks, bottoms, a top, and a sweater can be a great way to make sure that your senior loved one is dressed for the current weather.
